May was big for California rodeos, first with Redding then with Rowell Ranch Rodeo. Rowell Ranch Rodeo has a rich tradition dating back to it's founding over 90 years ago by Harry Rowell "The Rodeo King of the West". This rodeo kicks off every year with a tradition of having a rider carry the American flag from Harry's Hill to the arena. The main events start with bull riding on Friday followed by two days of PRCA rodeo and finishes off with a ranch bronc team competition.
Coy Montgomery took first in the bareback riding with a 78.5 point ride on Flying U Rodeo's Michaela's Madness. Grant Peterson got it done in 4.5 seconds for a first in the steer wrestling. In the team roping Tee Luttrell/Chris Young took first with a 5.2 second run. There was a tie in the saddle bronc riding with both Bailey Small, on Rosser Rodeo's Hitchhiker, and Wade jay Stansfield, on Rosser Rodeo's No. -863 each getting 79 point rides. Rial Engelhart took first in the tie-down roping with an 8.8 second run. Hayle Gibson took first in the barrel racing with a 15.53 second run. And Lane Vaughan took first in the bull riding for his 85.5 point ride on Flying U Rodeo's Lemon Drop.
