The Old West was alive and well in Cowtown last weekend. The Fort Worth Stockyards was host to the 33rd Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering, an annual event featuring cowboy poetry, music, ranch rodeo and chuck wagons. More than thirty years ago, a group gathered in the Cowtown Coliseum with the idea to celebrate cowboy poetry. That idea has now become a weekend celebration of the men and women who work cattle on horseback providing food for American’s dinner tables.
The thrills and spills of the ranch rodeo competition, the sights of cowboys, cowboy camps and turn-of-the-century chuck wagons; the sounds of western music and cowboy poetry and the smells of wood fires cooking camp meals in Dutch ovens are but a few of the event’s delights. The Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering honors the legacy of the cowboy and the grit and determination of the American spirt and way of life. If you have an appreciation for western lifestyle, history and legacy, or just want to learn more and experience cowboy culture up close, this is a not-to-be-missed happening.
